FOX Sports Chevrolet launches Camaro GT4 R race car

Based on the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 road car platform, the Pratt & Miller-built car will be homologated to SRO GT4 specifications and be eligible for worldwide competition. Stevenson, meanwhile, will give the Camaro GT4.R its IMSA debut one week later at Sebring. After months of speculation, Chevrolet has revealed its all-new GT4 contender, the Camaro GT4.R, which is slated to debut next month in both the Pirelli World Challenge and the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. The car is powered by a race-tuned 6.2-liter small-block V8, equipped with a six-speed Xtrac gearbox and paddle shift system. It is the first GT4-spec car to be developed by GM, and to be sold globally.

Stevenson Motorsports, who won the CTSCC title in 2015 with the last Camaro to compete there, announced today that they will rejoin CTSCC with the new Camaro GT4.R at Circuit of the Americas in May. The Camaro GT4.R was made for the global GT4 spec used in Pirelli World Challenges GTS class and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenges GS class, among numerous GT4 racing series around the planet. The new Camaro GT4.R is based on the 2017 Camaro ZL1 road car, per IMSA, and it packs a gigantic 6.2-liter LT1 small block V8 engine that can roast tires on demand when the race is over. A limited-slip Xtrac differential and two-way adjustable Ohlins Ra cing coil-over dampers help keep that power on the ground.

The modern Chevrolet Camaro road racing program has been successful in past years, with Stevenson Motorsports claiming the 2015 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championship for the GS division in a Camaro Z/28.R and piling up plenty of race wins along the way. Unfortunately, that team changed divisions after the 2015 season and that meant the end of their Camaro program. However, that is about to change, as General Motors has rolled out the newest Camaro endurance race car and Stevenson Motorsports will be the first team to campaign one â€" starting in just a few weeks.
